"After all, when a stone is dropped into a pond, the water continues quivering even after the stone has sunk to the bottom." - Arthur Golden, American author
From The Ugly Duckling to the writings of Henry David Thoreau, ponds are an indelible part of our environment and culture. You can learn how to draw a pond.
A pond is a small body of water. It can be natural or man-made and is home to animals like fish, frogs, insects, ducks, and herons. In cold areas, ponds freeze in winter, facilitating ice skating.

The difference between a pond and a lake is one of size. Ponds are shallow and completely "photic" - light reaches the bottom, allowing plants to grow.
Lakes are deep enough to have aphotic zones, "deep areas of water that receive no sunlight." Lakes typically have a larger surface area as well.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Pond
1. Begin by outlining the pond. Enclose a few stones of different sizes, using a long curved line for each. Then, connect the stones using long curved lines to outline the pond.
2. Draw an aquatic plant, erasing as necessary. Draw short curved lines across the water to indicate ripples at the base of the plant. From the ripples, extend pairs of curved lines that meet at points to outline the leaves. From between the leaves, the stems emerge. Draw a set of parallel curved lines for each stem.
3. Draw the tops of the cattail plant. Draw two elongate ovals for each seed head - one large, and one very small. Then, draw grass along the bottoms of the rocks, erasing as necessary. For each blade of grass, extend curved lines that meet at points.
4. Contour the surface of the stone with curved lines. Then, draw more grass alongside it, using a pair of lines that meet at a point for each blade. Next, begin drawing a fish swimming in the pond. Use overlapping curved lines to draw the smiling face and mouth. Shade a small oval within an oval to form the eye. Use curved lines to enclose the pectoral fin.
5. Complete the fish. Use curved lines to outline the body and tail, the dorsal and anal fins, and to contour the gills between the head and body. Then, sketch a frog sitting on a rock, erasing as necessary. Use curved lines to outline the head, mouth, eye ridge, and body.
6. Complete the frog. Use overlapping curved lines to sketch the legs, feet, and toes. Shade a small oval within an oval to form the eye, and use a curved line for the brow ridge above it. Then draw a dragonfly. Draw two smaller ovals within a larger oval to form the head and eyes.
7. Complete the dragonfly. Sketch the four wings. For each wing, extend a curved line and double it back upon itself. Connect the wings with curved lines to enclose the body. Draw short curved lines alongside the wings to indicate their rapid motion.
Then, begin drawing a water lily on the surface of the pond. Use curved lines to outline the first of the double-pointed petals.
8. Continue to outline the water lily, using a pair of curved lines that meet in a point for each. Then, draw a second blossom.
9. Draw the lily pads on the surface of the water. For each, draw a partial circle, its ends connected by a concave "V" shaped line. Draw small curved ripples around the stones, plants, and animals.
Color your cartoon of a peaceful pond.
