"After all, when a stone is dropped into a pond, the water continues quivering even after the stone has sunk to the bottom." - Arthur Golden, American author

From The Ugly Duckling to the writings of Henry David Thoreau, ponds are an indelible part of our environment and culture. You can learn how to draw a pond.

A pond is a small body of water. It can be natural or man-made and is home to animals like fish, frogs, insects, ducks, and herons. In cold areas, ponds freeze in winter, facilitating ice skating.

The difference between a pond and a lake is one of size. Ponds are shallow and completely "photic" - light reaches the bottom, allowing plants to grow.

Lakes are deep enough to have aphotic zones, "deep areas of water that receive no sunlight." Lakes typically have a larger surface area as well.

2. Draw an aquatic plant, erasing as necessary. Draw short curved lines across the water to indicate ripples at the base of the plant. From the ripples, extend pairs of curved lines that meet at points to outline the leaves. From between the leaves, the stems emerge. Draw a set of parallel curved lines for each stem.
